Financial Support
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics supports its graduate students in the following ways.
1. Teaching/Research Assistantships
While Teaching Assistantships form the primary source of financial aid for MATH/STAT graduate students, there are a limited number of Research Assistantships for doctoral students funded by external grants.
Doctoral TAs or RAs enrolled full time will receive, as long as they remain eligible:
- A multi-year funding commitment (up to five years)
- Academic year compensation at a minimum of $22,500
- Full tuition through the Graduate Assistant Support Plan (GASP)
- Health insurance – premium payment for the Student Blue plan
Master’s TAs enrolled full time will receive, as long as they remain eligible:
- A two-year funding commitment
- Academic year compensation at a minimum of $14,250
- Tuition in the amount to pay for an NC resident for 9 hours (nonresident students will have to pay the rest to cover full nonresident tuition).
Applicants interested in being considered for teaching assistantships should apply early and make sure that their application is complete by March 1st, including all transcripts, all recommendation letters, and all standardized test scores when applicable.
Summer support in the form of teaching or grading/tutoring is available on a competitive basis with stipends in the range of $3,200-$4,000 for one summer session or $6,400-$8,000 for two summer sessions.
The UNC Charlotte’s policy on graduate student funding and assistantships can be found here.
2. Instructional Assistantship or Grader/Tutor-ship
For a doctoral student who is not supported through teaching or research assistantship, the department can offer an Instructional Assistant or Grader/Tutor position, for a workload of up to 20 hours per week at the rate of $20.00 per hour, namely, for a total stipend for a semester up to $6,000.
For a master’s student who is not supported through teaching or research assistantship, the department can offer an Instructional Assistant or Grader/Tutor position, for a workload of up to 20 hours per week at the rate of $15.00 per hour, namely, for a total stipend for a semester up to $4,500.
Graduate students hired as Instructional Assistants or Graders/Tutors, however, are not eligible for tuition award and health insurance benefit. Please contact the graduate coordinator if you are interested in such a position.
